Heading to the Association of Writers and Writing Professionals (AWP) conference in Portland next week and got these shiny new WILD LIFE bookmarks to bring with me (sharpie animal doodles to be added on the plane). Come find me at the conference and I’ll draw your favorite animal on it!

What’s a 1/4 scorpion, 1/4 spider, 1/2 demon and can make 3 PhDs run screaming? The SOLIFUGID.

Solifugids can run up to 10 mph, grow to be about 5 inches long and have no problem chasing humans. Really fun when they take up residence in your storage hut and try to attack anyone that comes in. The stuff of nightmares, people.

When my family lived in Botswana, near death experiences were so common that we just called them “NDEs.”

My first NDE was when I was about six months old, when a black mamba snuck into my bedroom. For those that aren’t familiar: black mambas are aggressive, fast, and contain a neurotoxic venom that can kill you in 30 minutes.

Have you ever had an NDE? What happened??

“As my eyes adjusted, I realized with a shock that the sticks weren’t sticks at all, but bones protruding from the sand. Human bones, hundreds of them, and skulls too, some with hair still attached to them.”

I’m so excited to announce that Fodor’s picked up my story about an amazing journey to a very special place in Ethiopia! Read more in my Fodor’s article on Ethiopia’s Yemrehana Krestos Church
